It connects the most tourist-oriented area of the historic center near <strong>St. Mark\u2019s Square<\/strong> with the famous <strong>Rialto Market<\/strong>, and its history is marked by dramatic events \u2014 two collapses and a devastating fire. Considering that the <strong>Rialto Market<\/strong> dates back to the end of the first millennium, it comes as no surprise that an early bridge was built as early as the 12th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">To cross the Grand Canal, the very first solution devised was a <strong>floating bridge<\/strong>, essentially made up of many boats connected by wooden planks. This solution, however, made navigation along the canal more difficult for other vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rialto Bridge Venice \u2013 dimensions and features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The project was designed by architect <strong>Antonio da Ponte<\/strong>, and construction began toward the end of the 16th century.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">The bridge consists of <strong>a single large arch<\/strong> spanning 28 meters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wooden piles supporting the Rialto Bridge are <strong>6,000<\/strong> in total. <strong>6.000.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The bridge is <strong>48 meters long<\/strong> and <strong>22 meters wide<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">There are <strong>3 stairways<\/strong> that allow visitors to reach the highest point of the bridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rialto Bridge collapsed twice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A century later, the first permanent structure supported by wooden piles was built, but it collapsed following a popular uprising (early 14th century). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">A wooden drawbridge was then rebuilt, but this too was short-lived: in 1444, the entire population of Venice gathered to witness the wedding procession of the Marchioness of Ferrara as it crossed the canal by boat. On the side of the bridge facing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veneziadaesplorare.com\/en\/st-mark-square\/\" title=\"St. Mark Square Venice\">St. Mark\u2019s Square<\/a><\/strong> there are sculptures depicting the <strong>Annunciation<\/strong> and the day of Venice\u2019s birth, namely March 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The sculptures of the Annunciation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the left side, the Archangel announces to Mary that she will become the Mother of God, while on the right side the Virgin accepts the will of the Almighty. At the top of the bridge stands the Dove of the Holy Spirit, descending upon Her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Legend and history carved in stone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">This alone would be enough to reaffirm the city\u2019s history, but the project goes even further. On <strong>each of the 4 sides of the Rialto Bridge<\/strong> there is an inscription that tells:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>who the Doge in office at the time was, namely Pasquale Cicogna.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the year the works were completed, that is 1591 from the Incarnation of Christ.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inoltre si legge anche l&#8217;iscrizione &#8220;<em>urbis condite 1170<\/em>&#8220;, ovvero a <strong>1.170 anni dalla fondazione di Venezia<\/strong>. Una rapida sottrazione ci fornisce la nascita della citt\u00e0, cio\u00e8 l&#8217;anno 421, il <strong>25 marzo del 421<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Il Ponte di Rialto oggi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, this structure housed Venetian workshops and artisan activities. Today, with the rise of mass tourism, the Rialto Bridge is lined almost exclusively with small shops selling souvenirs.
