Starting from Piazzale Roma or the train station
Wondering what to see in Venice in one day? You can start your itinerary from Piazzale Roma or from Santa Lucia Train Station, the main arrival points for travelers coming from mainland Italy.
In both cases, you’ll find a vaporetto stop right nearby, which marks the beginning of your journey through the Serenissima. The line we recommend taking is Line 2, and your first stop will be Rialto (it runs approximately every 12 minutes).
1 – Boat ride along the Grand Canal
Duration: approx. 15 minutes
During the ride, we recommend sitting back and enjoying the stunning views along the Grand Canal. You are right in the heart of Venice, traveling along its most important waterway, where the most prestigious palaces of the Venetian nobility were once built.
The first bridge you will pass under is the Scalzi Bridge, one of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal on foot. Its name comes from the nearby Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth, also known as the Church of the Scalzi.

2 – The Rialto Bridge
You will immediately recognize the magnificent Rialto Bridge, the first stop on this itinerary.
It is one of the true icons of Venice, a remarkable masterpiece of architecture and engineering, supported by more than 6,000 wooden piles. The bridge is 48 meters long and 22 meters wide. The original structure, built in the late Middle Ages, was made of wood. The current stone bridge was designed by Antonio da Ponte at the end of the 16th century.
From the top of the bridge’s staircase, thousands of visitors stop every day to admire and photograph the breathtaking scenery of the lagoon and the Grand Canal.
3 – Toward St. Mark’s Square
Duration: about 10 minutes

4 – St. Mark’s Square
Duration: about 20 minutes
We have arrived in the very heart of La Serenissima, one of the most visited squares in the world. In front of you stand extraordinary architectural masterpieces, such as the stunning St. Mark’s Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), also known as the Golden Cathedral for its breathtaking golden mosaics.
To the right of the Basilica lies the political heart of the former Republic of Venice: Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the residence of the Doge and a building rich in contrasts. Inside its magnificent halls, kings, queens, and diplomats from all over the world were once received.
However, it was also the place where justice was administered. Its prisons and torture chambers were infamous and feared by all. From the famous Piombi prisons of Venice, only one man ever managed to escape: Giacomo Casanova.

5 – From the square to the lagoon

We recommend a pleasant walk beneath the arcades of St. Mark’s Square, in the shade of the iconic St. Mark’s Campanile. The area is filled with charming cafés featuring live piano music, artisan shops, colors, lights, and above all the magical shadows cast across these timeless spaces.
Another landmark worth admiring in the square is the Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio), recognizable by its distinctive zodiac symbols.
We then continue along the Basilica and Doge’s Palace until reaching the Riva degli Schiavoni, from where you can admire, across the water, the beautiful Church of San Giorgio Maggiore and follow the skyline of Giudecca Island.
6 - Bridge of Sighs
Duration: about 5 minutes
We follow Riva degli Schiavoni until we reach Ponte della Paglia. Why is there always such a crowd here? Because from this exact spot you can admire the famous Bridge of Sighs.
This unique structure, richly decorated with historical and biblical reliefs, owes its evocative name to its original function: it connected the prisons directly to Doge’s Palace.
The bridge was crossed by prisoners awaiting trial. Through the small stone windows, they would catch a final glimpse of the lagoon, sighing at the sight of the sea and the freedom they would likely never experience again.

7 – Riva degli Schiavoni
Duration: about 10 minutes
We continue our walk along the waterfront, heading toward Riva degli Schiavoni. Atmospheric in every season, this long promenade offers one of the most beautiful and open views over the Venetian lagoon.
Along the way, you will come across the imposing statue dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, first King of Italy. After passing the Church of the Pietà, you will cross Ponte del Sepolcro and reach the Arsenale vaporetto stop. From here, it is about another 10-minute walk toward the historic Venetian Arsenal, one of the most important shipyards in European history.
8 - The Venice Arsenal
Duration: about 30 minutes
Our next stop is the historic heart of Venice’s maritime power: the Venice Arsenal. With more than 1,000 years of history, this vast shipyard once employed over 3,000 workers and was capable of producing the famous war galleys that made Venice one of the most feared naval powers in the Mediterranean.
Today, many of the Arsenal’s spaces are used by the Venice Biennale, the international exhibition dedicated to contemporary art. For this reason, not all areas of the Arsenal are always open to the public.
